How to Choose a Sleeve Labeling Machine: Shrink Sleeve, Paper Sleeve or Wrap-Around Label?
“Sleeve labeling machine” covers three very different machines. One shrinks a printed film tube around each bottle, one wraps a cardboard sleeve around a multipack, and one wraps a self-adhesive label round the body. Here is how each works, what it suits, and what to check before you ask for quotes.

Three machines behind one search
Buyers searching for a sleeve labeling machine are usually after one of three results: a full-body label on a single container, a printed band that holds several containers together as a retail pack, or a simple wrap-around label at the lowest cost per unit. The machines that do each job are built differently, so the first step is to be clear about the pack you want to sell.
| Shrink sleeve labeler | Paper sleeve wrapper | Wrap-around labeler | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it applies | Printed film tube, shrunk tight by heat | Printed cardboard sleeve around a group | Self-adhesive paper or film label |
| Coverage | 360°, shoulder to base, plus tamper bands | Most of the multipack, with a window if wanted | Body panel of a round or flat container |
| Best for | Contoured bottles, jars, cups and cans | Cup, can and bottle multipacks | Cylindrical bottles and jars, flat packs |
| Needs heat | Yes: steam or hot-air tunnel | No | No |

Shrink sleeve labeling machines: a label that follows every curve
A shrink sleeve labeler takes a printed, seamed film tube from a reel, opens it over a mandrel sized to your container, cuts each sleeve to length in register with the artwork and shoots it down over the container. A steam or hot-air tunnel then shrinks the film tight to the shape. Because the sleeve is printed on the inside of the film, the graphics are protected from scuffing in transport and in the fridge.
Choose a shrink sleeve labeler when:
- Your container is contoured, square or tapered, where a flat label would wrinkle or not reach.
- You want 360° branding, or a tamper-evident band over the cap applied in the same pass.
- You want to buy plain, unprinted bottles, jars or cups and change designs with the sleeve alone.
What to check: the film (PVC, PET, OPS or PLA) and how far it shrinks, steam versus hot-air tunnel for your shape, and line speed. Speed always depends on the container, the sleeve length and the film, so ask for it to be confirmed on your own samples. For lines that run around the clock, a double-reel unwinder with automatic splicing keeps the line going through roll changes.

Paper sleeve wrapping machines: the multipack without plastic film
If what you sell is a pack of cups or cans rather than a single container, a paper sleeve wrapper is often the better answer. It groups the containers and wraps them in a printed cardboard sleeve that carries your branding and holds the pack together, in place of shrink film around the group. Cardboard gives the shelf a premium look and fits retailers who are asking for less plastic.

Our SleeveWrap was designed for exactly this. It takes sealed fruit cups straight from the line at random, aligns them, stacks four cups mouth to mouth and wraps each pack in a printed cardboard sleeve, at 120 packs (480 cups) a minute. That is enough for four sealing lines from one wrapper. The 4 × 4 oz fruit cup pack runs in production today, and we configure SleeveWrap for single cups and bowls, cup, can and bottle multipacks on request.

Wrap-around labelers: when a flat label is enough
For a round bottle or jar with straight sides, a self-adhesive wrap-around label is usually the lowest cost per unit. There is no heat tunnel and changeovers are quick. The limit is the shape: a flat label cannot follow a curve, cover a shoulder or seal a cap. Our labeling range covers round, flat and square bottles, jars and tubes.

Five questions to answer before you ask for quotes
- What do you sell: a single container, or a multipack of cups, cans or bottles?
- What shape and material is the container, and does it need a tamper-evident band?
- What output do you need per minute, and how many hours a day will the line run?
- How many container sizes and designs will you run, and how often will you change over?
- Do your retail customers have targets for less plastic packaging?
With these answers, and a few sample containers with your sleeve or label drawing, a supplier can confirm the right machine, the real line speed and the layout before you order. That is how we quote every sleeve labeling project.
